The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo vs Trent Reznor vs H&M

Fashion, Movies and Industrial Music…together at last!

The North American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo will be out soon, and I am excited for the movie, and the Trent Reznor composed soundtrack! I loved the score that he did for The Social Network, and his collaboration with Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for her cover of Led Zepplin’s Immigrant Song is awesome. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the soundtrack.

Check out the teaser trailer with Karen O’s cover of Immigrant Song:

…And the obviously NSFW (and only seen in Europe) promotional poster.  I honestly didn’t recognize Rooney Mara.  Can you believe that’s the girl that’s Jesse Eisenberg called a bitch in the beginning of The Social Network? Idiot.

Last but not least, the other great piece of news is that H&M will be producing a line inspired by the movie, which has a great edgy look to it. Trish Summerville, the costume designer for the film, who developed actress Rooney Mara’s look for playing Salander, created the capsule collection for the Swedish clothing retailer

“We put a lot of aged-in washes and finishes, which goes along the lines of the Salander character. In the film, her clothes are quite extreme. They’re really worn down, they’re dirty,” Summerville said in an exclusive interview. “So for us, it was taking that kind of concept and giving it more of a realistic fashion feel.”  as quoted by Trish to WWD.

A quick look:

Can’t wait for the movie, the soundtrack and the clothing line!

Style on the Street – Kitsilano

Saw this fellow while out on my lunch break from work. Only had my iPhone, but his scarf really caught my eye, so I had to get a quick photo.  He’s got a great all-around look for the Fall, with the over-sized scarf, slim and cuffed jeans, and suede slip-ons.  Great look.

Style on the Street – Yaletown

It was a beautiful sunny day today, so Jill and I took a walk through downtown Vancouver, and while in Yaletown came across this girl in her perfect Fall outfit.

Absolutely love the navy blue pea coat and matching purse (tan and navy go so well together) and I appreciate her keeping it classy with the tights. Great look!

Sounds like a good time to me!

Rare Finds, Neighborhood Denim of Japan

Over the next couple of weeks, I am going to highlight some of the Denim brands that we have brought into the Denim Hunter web-store.  Some of my favorites are Canadian (like the Naked and Famous jeans we found this week) and many are American born.  Today I want to talk about a pair of jeans that came from the other side of the planet.

This week on our usual adventure around Vancouver looking for jeans to bring back to the Denim Hunter store, we found something SUPER rare, at least around here…. a pair of authentic Neighborhood Jeans from Harajuku, Tokyo.

A bit about Neighborhood Denim from their website:

In 1994, Shinsuke Takizawa was involved in motorcycles and the surrounding counter culture when he started the brand in Harajuku, Tokyo.
The concept of “basic clothing created by digesting unique interpretations of elements from motorcycles, military, outdoor, trad, etc. and also suggesting this lifestyle” is the base for all products and projects which NEIGHBORHOOD is involved with, and always lives in the themes for the seasons.

The pair of jeans that we found were of their heavily distressed and manipulated variety, with multiple washes and complimentary stitching. Very similar to the pair shown here.
The heavily distressed style may not be for everyone, but the amount of workmanship that went into these jeans is crazy, not to mention the amount of time would have taken to complete all the alterations.  That being said, I wasn’t completely surprised (OK, maybe a little surprised) when I found out that these jeans retail for $850.00 Canadian! No, that is not a typo, but I guess they come in limited, hand made runs, so they are not for the faint of wallet.

I think I might just frame them.

Tomorrow, were going to come back to our side of the planet, and have a look at two of my favorite Canadian brands, Fidelity and Naked & Famous!

Connor Youngblood/ Winter’s Coming

So, winter is on it’s way, the days are getting shorter, colder, life winds down a bit.  This is the time of year that music really starts working it’s way into my daily life again.  I have seasonal affective disorder syndrome (SADS) which basically means that the long, cold, grey days make me somewhat miserable, or at least a little melancholy. That being said, music is a bit of catharsis for me, and when I heard this song from Connor Youngblood, it definitely fit the bill.

This winter, I’m going to keep blogging about fashion for sure, but there will definitely be a heavier emphasis on the musical content of The Style Butcher.

Now, I’m not all doom and gloom during the winter months, as some of my favorite fashion comes out this time of year.  People are classier, maybe a little more contemporary with pea-coats, scarves and gloves.  Now we can layer and create a little more with our wardrobe. One of my favorite things in my closet is the wool overcoat that was my late grandfathers, and handed down to me by my father.  This coat is at least 40 or 50 years old, but doesn’t look out of date at all, and I will wear it for years to come, most likely with a nice pair of leather gloves and scarf. Just like I said… a little more contemporary, a little less hip, but a million times classier, and timeless. I’m always a fan of what Dolce & Gabbana put out, and their Fall/Winter 2011 collection is no exception, and fits exactly into what I previously described. (All photos c/o D&G).

One more from Connor Youngblood:

See ya next summer, hipsters.

OK, that may not be entirely accurate, cuz that scarf and skinny tie are pretty hip, but I’ll let it slide.

Techno History

I’m a big fan of Richie Hawtin, but for all my years in the rave and club scene have not had the pleasure of seeing him play live.  I recently came across this well done documentary about his life as a DJ, producer and promoter.  For those of you that were into the electronic scene in the 80’s and 90’s, this movie will take you waaaaaay back with some of the interviews (Derek May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills, John Aquaviva).  Well worth watching.

Fall/Winter 2012 Roundup

I’m never really interested in the couture fashion shows, and though I can appreciate the clothing, it just doesn’t do it for me.  That being said, I went and hunted down a few fashion shows that I can get behind.

Enjoy.

Diesel Black Gold – I enjoyed last seasons collection, and I like F/W 2012 just as much.

D&G Womenswear

Lanvin – A little more high fashion than I’m usually into, but I’ve always love the way Lanvin creates his looks and puts it all together.

First New DJ mix in 7 Years – Guilty Pleasures Vol 1, Week 1.

Spinning records in the now defunct Stylus Records in Victoria, age 18

So, last night I stayed up and mixed an hour DJ set, and it turned out alright. OK, well, maybe a bit dodgy. No trainrecks or anything, but I only planned out the first 5 tracks, then just kind of winged it, so some of the tracks don’t blend as well as I’d have liked, but it’s good for a first shot.

Lucky Bar DJ Challenge 2008

Now, about the music. It is not cool. If you are a hipster music snob, I already know your opinion, and it’s not necessary to let me know how uncool I am. I used to play music for the people, but now these mixes are for me. This is shameful music to sing to when you’re alone in the car, and you’ll probably turn it down when you get to a stop light for fear of being ostracized.  There are two David Guetta songs in a row. Nuff said.

Guilty Pleasures Vol 1 by stylebutcher

I am going to try and release a new mix every week! Hopefully they will get better as I go.

Have a listen! If you like it, let me know! If you are ashamed to say you like it, then we can just use the code word “peanut butter”.

Guilty Pleasures – Vol 1

I am working on a DJ mix.  It is not for cool people, or hipsters. It is shameful music for people who like to shake their goods in the kitchen.

This is the first track.

Enjoy.

The mix will also features: Kid Kudi, Deadmou5, Kaskade, Cut Copy, Swedish House Mafia, and one of my new favorites, Avicci.

Music to Create to.

Music is always part of my creative inspirations. Now, I can’t stand 99% of rap, but I do enjoy some hip-hop here and there.

Just came across this on Earmilk.com

Really like the chorus hook (I know Coldplay did it, but who originally wrote it?)

Brutally Beautiful – Obscure Photographs of Haunting Spectacles, An Art Party.

This Saturday, I attended the Brutally Beautiful Art Show at the Gastown Tattoo Parlor, and it was amazing!  The theme was turn-of-the-century, and people went all out!

A bit about Brutally Beautiful from their Facebook page:

We are Photographer & Artistic Director Amanda Bullick and Hair and Set Stylist Erica van der Basch. We’ve been collaborating for the past 3 years and our individual perspectives coalesced to form Brutally Beautiful. We love working together and with our clients, united by similar aesthetic inspirations and the art we create.
At Brutally Beautiful, we are passionate about customizing every photo shoot and offering a very calm, creative, harmonious environment. Each session involves a detailed process of research, design and production that leads to boldly original images.

The photography display was fantastic, and much of the original photos can be seen on their site here.  I, unfortunately, did not realize that it was a dress-up party, (though I should have, knowing the girls putting it on), but I have some great photos of some of the folks that did dress up in their finest!

I would say the show was a great success! Here are some of my favorite shots, and, as usual, some are off focus, cuz pro photog I am not…

As usual, Jason looks awesome, even at a costume party, he looks dapper as hell. Love those shoes and jeans (I think jeans?).

My favorite costume of the night – Jordan P’s “Strong Man”, which later became the “Flashing Strong Man”. Awesome.

Jason’s other half, the always (always) well dressed Patrick, I feel so bad that this shot is out of focus, but anyways, I love the scarf and the custom lapel pin.

Here we have Matty the Englishman looking right proper, and Renee with her awesome sailor inspired tube top dress. I love that dress, and it could be worn anytime, (without the hat) not just at an 1800’s themed party.

Party Time.

Burlesque girl #1 – Charlene, as I have just learned, collects turn of the century burlesque attire, and provided most of the outfits for the girls last night!

Ah, what side show would be complete without the Moth-Girl, previously known as the getting-married-on-a-boat girl, Kaitlyn. Also, Ryerson on her left in his custom made vest. Rad.

Really cool corset and the scarf and hair flower work great!

I loved this hat!

And last, but never least, we have Chris with someones hair extensions on his head, bringing him right back to the mid 80’s.  I doubt Chris actually even liked Flock of Seagulls.

Style on the Street – Summer is Still Here.

I stopped by 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters on West 4th Ave in Kitsilano, and noticed this well dressed gentleman.

I love the great mix of bright colours, and pairing the dress shoes with shorts is always a good idea in my books.

Kid Cudi and that DJ

This was released a while ago, but I just came across it, and I dig it – Kid Cudi doing “Memories” with David Guetta producing.  I’m also a fan of Kid Cudi’s indie/hipster/hip-hop clothing style.  Aside from that, what’s up with hearing he got arrested for crack possession? I know he was arrested (again) but not sure what ever came of it.  Anyways, here are some of my favorite style shots of Cudi.

Love the slim suit jacket and hat.

I’m going to have to bite this look and get myself some straight leg jeans and a leather jacket for this winter.

I’m so glad the days of saggy jeans and oversized everything in rap/hip-hop are on the way out.  Bring on the fashionable MC’s.

Obligatory huge glasses/hipster-cred shot.

He may have issues with the law, but I like his style.

Dance Dance Party Party

I know this is everywhere right now, but it’s kind of fun (funny?) especially for a fancy-pants label like Lanvin.
Anywho… Fall/Winter 2011-2012 Ad campaign.

Small things that make a big difference

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I miss playing with music, and anytime I hear a song that moves me, all I can think about is sharing it with other people. I was at work today, and ended up putting this song on repeat.

This is the kind of thing that makes me want to DJ again.

Maybe you’re into it, maybe not, but I could see myself opening a set with it.

I’m on a boat!

Our friends Ryerson and Katelyn got hitched on the weekend, and to celebrate, they rented a party boat, got a whole bunch of booze, and took us out for a cruise around Vancouver. Ryerson and Katelyn are both stylish folks, so here are a couple of nice shots from the trip!

I love the vest and suspenders, and I am going to buy a pair of those shoes for myself!

Katelyn wore her grandmothers wedding dress for the ceremony, and then found this pretty lace dress from Top Shop in England.  Notice the bandage on her left leg, they both got tattoos to commemorate the occasion!

We’re on a boat!

Good times were had by all!

Beef and Bourbon.

I went on a little adventure on my own last night, as the wife was off visiting with her mom.

I should not be left to my own devices.

First stop was the art show at The Gastown Tattoo Parlor, which featured work from Jorden Blue and David James Doody, and free PBR.  Good times.

Outside I found these folks:

There’s a lot of good stuff going on in this photo. Cowboy shirts, summer suits, and bicycles. Excellent.

I really liked this outfit, great cohesion, and you can never go wrong with a good hat.

After the show I headed down to Peckinpah to visit my friend Liam Lux, eat BBQ and drink bourbon…lots of delicious bourbon.  Peckinpah has a bourbon list that fills an entire menu page, and I decided to have a one-man tasting event. I made some friends at the bar, and then decided to walk home from Gastown to Kitsilano at 2am, a bit more than wobbly.

Back out on the town tonight, and hopefully I will find more well dressed people!

Style on the Street – One more from Barcelona

Another great shot c/o Kim!

As seen on the Passeig de Gracia:

Stylish dress, and I’m starting to wonder if everyone looks like a model on their day off…

Style on the Street – Fresh from Barcelona!

This photo comes from my mother-in-law, Kim, who just came back from a trip to Europe, and scored a couple of nice streetstyle photos for me! Thanks Kim!

Seen on the Passeig de Gracia, one of the most famous fashion districts in Barcelona.

Love the summer suit!
