- The Style Butcher started out in 2012 as a street style and fashion blog. In 2015 most of the focus was on the current projects of my luxury workwear company Search & Rescue Denim Co. Now in 2016 I am turning the focus of this blog to a sort of entrepreneurial journal. I want to chronicle the next stages of building an international fashion brand and I think writing out my experiences will help me understand a bit more what I want out of this business, and this life. Thanks for reading!

Goorin Bros’ – Bold Hatmakers
The only place you need to go for a new hat.
This weekend I visited Goorin Brothers in Yaletown to find myself a good new hat. I’ve recently started losing my hair, so my collection of hats is starting to grow, and Goorin has a great selection of stylish choices.
If you’ve never visited their shop, it’s a beautiful location with an old world feel to it – lots of dark wood and eclectic decor, and of course, lots and lots of excellent hats.
A little about Goorin Bros’ from their site:
In 1895, master craftsman Cassel Goorin sold his first hat off a horse cart in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Cassel’s sons – the Goorin Brothers – continued the tradition of hat making when they moved the family business to San Francisco in 1949.
Today, Goorin Brothers is led by Cassel’s great grandson who remains dedicated to the art of bold hat making by crafting hats inspired by San Francisco’s rich artistic community.
Cassel’s legacy can be found in the detail and integrity of each hat. For over a century, the authentic character of Goorin has allowed individuals to tell their story without ever having to say a word.
I love the wall paintings in the shop!
For an extra $10-$12 you can get one of these awesome hat boxes to store your collection in. I went with the large box as I figured that my hat collection is only going to grow in the next few years. Also, if you buy 10 hats from Goorin, you get an 11th one free! I look forward to eventually getting that free hat.
Last but not least, here’s my new hat. I like it a lot. See how it does an excellent job of hiding the fact that my hair is disappearing faster than the rain forest? I think it looks pretty good too.
Check out more hats from Goorin Bros’ here.

Style on the Street – Sunday Funday pt 3.
These guys looked great together, and their wiener dog was pretty awesome too. Everyone is trying to get a few more days of shorts and summer style in before the weather turns. I really like all of the shades of denim going on here.
This! I finally found someone on the street with some Galaxy printed tights! These are all over the fashion blogs right now, but as with anything in fashion, it takes a bit of time for it to trickle down to the streets. I really like them, and this girl wears it well contrasted against her sheer black blouse.
This doesn’t really have anything to do with fashion, but, seriously, it’s rad.
Fall is coming, and that means floral. I saw this young woman on Robson St with a great printed maxi-dress. Nicely contrasted with the black ankle boots.
We ran into a couple of girls promoting the new Top Shop in the Bay Centre. I really liked the sleeveless top and liquid leggings paired with some metallic accessories that she was wearing.
Some selvedge jeans, beat up boots and a Vespa. Looks good to me.
Next post, we visit the Goorin Brothers hat store in Yaletown!

Camouflage is making a comeback this Fall
…and if you want to get in on the trend, heading to the mall is not a great idea. What you want to do is go find yourself an army surplus store, which is exactly what we did.
We headed down to Gorilla Surplus on Broadway here in Vancouver’s East Side to find some good stuff. And good stuff we did find!
I was looking for a button down camo shirt, which they had a great variety of, but if I had wanted to, I could have done all of my shopping for the zombie apocalypse here too.
Camo shopping is serious business, apparently. Good tip: I tried on a few brand-new shirts first, but then I found all the second hand stuff in the back of the store, which was half the price, and where I eventually found the shirt I bought.
So, yeah. Camo. Get on it, people.

They were shooting a film in Gastown, and I think this fellow might have been an extra. Either way, his look was effortless, and well put together. It’s like a tailored utility look.
Another potential extra from the movie shoot, this girls outfit was adorable. Great mixing of colour, and unfortunately my camera skill did not do it justice.

Style on the Street – Friends from Boys’co
I ran into another friend in town today, Yohji, who’s a stylist at Boys’co on Robson. Aside from one hell of a greasy mustache, Yohji does a great job crafting his style. Modern grunge I would call it. The boots, t-shirt, jeans and leather bag all work exactly how I think he intended, and I think it looks good. On a side note, I really love Boys’co – I bought and awesome pair of Nudie jeans there last night.

Style on the Street – Gastown (with well dressed friends)
I ran into my friend Hunter in Gastown today, and my god he’s a stylish man. Hunter was a runway model in Europe, and now resides here in Vancouver. This man has more steez than you. End of story.

Look at that bag. That thing is fucking beautiful. I love tan leather duffel bags, but holy hell they’re usually really expensive. Aside from the bag, I love this guys oversized heavy knit cardigan, his cuffed grey chinos and desert boots. Lots of good stuff going on here.

Style on the Street – Camo on Robson
This is a perfect example of how camo is coming back this fall. Pick one piece, match it with something contrasting (preferably dark) and you’re good to go. Her choice of dark blue skinny jeans and ankle boots works perfectly. I think I’m actually starting to appreciate camo.

Style on the Street – Gastown
I saw this young woman getting a juice from one of the many food carts here in Vancouver. I love her oversize scarf that’s almost like wearing a second shirt. The distressed military boots and skinny jeans look great, and if you look a little closer, you’ll see she’s wearing an extra large mens style watch, which is very cool (and still very trendy).

Favorite Looks & Future Trends
I’ve been building a look book over on Looksoup.com of styles, trends and street wear that I love. Some of what I’ve curated might end up in VeloModa as well. Here are a few of my favorite looks from the past week. Coming up this year we’re going to see a lot more camo, macro-prints and print

Style on the Street – Robson
I ran into this fellow on Robson St, and as soon as I saw him coming, I loved the way he made a simple colour blocked outfit work. I don’t think this picture does him justice, but his look made so much sense in person. He mentioned that he’s also a style blogger, so if you’re reading this, leave a comment and let me know where to find your blog!

Style on the Street – Downtown Vancouver
I caught one of the many students passing through downtown, on his way home from classes it would appear. He seemed pleasantly surprised that I wanted to take his picture. He had a next-level preppy thing going on, so I’m into it.
