Style on the Street

Today was rainy and gloomy, so I figured my chances of finding anyone blog worthy were slim, but I was happy to run into this fellow working at the wine store down the block from us!  Now, I usually get one of three reactions from people when I ask to photograph them for the blog.  Some come off so self assured like “of course you want to photograph me, cuz I’m awesome”.  Others are surprised and hesitant, figuring they are going to be on someones’ porn site, which often means that I have to explain that yes, I actually write a fashion blog, and no, they aren’t going to be featured on some sort of “real girls” site.  Finally, some people are surprised and flattered that someone has noticed their fashion effort, and are more than happy to let me take their photo. Today’s style on the street, Jordan, was my favorite type, surprised and flattered. I could tell that he had put some effort into what he was wearing, but it was well done, so didn’t look contrived.  Everything he was wearing worked perfectly together without being matchy-matchy, and to top it off he was rocking one of my current favorite trends, the cuffed skinny jeans with a sweet pair of dress shoes.

Well done sir.

Dear Mother, Mother

It was Vancouver’s 125th anniversary last weekend, and there was a great free concert in Stanley Park, headlined by our latest local rock and roll success, Mother Mother.  I am a fan, and there is little better than a free show with 10,000 of your friends.

Their videos are pretty sweet and art-y, and I love this song…

Not too much fashion in this blog post, but it’s my blog, so I’ma do what I want. Though I do like the costumes in the video.

Ponchos? Ponchos!

Could I get away with wearing a poncho? No.

Can George, with his flowing blonde hipster hair? Yes. Will this be a new trend? Doubtful. But is it still awesome?

Hell yes.

And Georges friend –

It was a good Canada Day.

German Sparkle Party.

We went to a German Sparkle Party.  Umm. Yeaaaaaaah.

It was a party theme based on this…

I am waiting on hearing back about a job I interviewed for, so I will spare the world the embarrassing (awesome) costume I went in.

I saw this girl there who dressed up for the party, but was also matching and well put together.

That is all you get from the German Sparkle Party.

The Cheaper Show No. 10

I went to the Cheaper Art Show with my wife Jill and our friend Andrea on Saturday night, and there were a whoooole lot of well dressed people there. Definitely a few style trends seen again and again (like cuffed skinny jeans with high ankle boots on guys), but plenty of original stuff as well.

It was a good party, I must say.

Regarding the show:

The Cheaper Show is a massive one night art event where all of the work sells for a uniform affordable price. We remove barriers between talented emerging artists, established artists, buyers, curators, gallery directors and collectors, creating new channels for engaged interaction. The show’s format is unparalleled anywhere in Canada. This year’s show marks our 10th anniversary.  (read more about the show)

Here are some of my favorite shots from the show:

The line was around the block.

The robots that greeted us.

This outfit was simple, but sleek and she rocked is so well. One of my favorites from the night.

Casual suit awesomeness. I dig.

Cute shorts on her, good hat on him.

This is probably my vote for best dressed guy at the show. Really simple, but the pants had great pockets on the back that were cut low and looked cool, and the shirt and boots just worked with it all. Great look.

Good boots, good hat, good look.

The Mob.

Best smile at the show on her (and ability to wear red and yellow together), best showing of pink on a man on him.

And that was the Cheaper Art Show.

Summer!!! good lord, finally….

So, not where you would exactly expect to find well put together men, but while I was ordering my 1/3 pounder angus and cheese (deluxe!) at McShitty’s, I noticed these two fellas coordinated to the hilt!

Shoes match shirts, glasses match belt, some chambray and a full sleeves of tattoos…

That can only mean one thing….  summer is here!

Well done, boys.

Style on the Street..er, bar.

Went and checked out Displace on West 4th in Kits last night, great little pub! Our server had on some great earrings that went well with her hair, and she obliged to a quick photo.

*I should note that it is as hard to ask a girl in a pub for a photo without seeming creepy as it is to carry a butcher knife through a room without looking like a psycho…alomost impossible.

Anywho…

Gastown Tattoo Parlor Grand Opening

Last weekend I attended the Grand Opening at the Gastown Tattoo Parlor, and it was awesome.  There was beer, tattoos, stylish folks, and one young man who accidentally showed his balls to his mother-in-law. Good times!

Here are a few of my favorite photos and clothes from the night.

Mitch and Amanda. Purveyors of the post-hipster movement, and soon to be wed!

Patrick and his partner, two very well dressed gentleman from the party. Look at the shoes! God I love shoes.. Anyways, very well put together, and I really like the jacket and shoes on Patrick’s partner, and any man that can pull off a bow tie and boots is a winner in my books. Cheers.

I don’t know who this girl is, and I didn’t ask to take this photo (sorry) but I love that scarf, and I love this photo!

A (faux?) fur hat and a party dress. Need I say more?

Garret was the first punk to dress as up fancy, at least in my neighborhood.  Now all the cool kids are doing it.

Go and see Janet on Brutally Beautiful! She gets mad fancy! Hell, go see all the folks on Brutally Beautiful, there are so many rad photos there!

And finally, what would a tattoo shop grand opening be without some finger tattooing!?

Congrats to everyone at Gastown Tattoo Parlor for opening a great shop, and throwing a rad party!

Main Street Wander

Jill and I decided to take a walk down Main St. today and do a little bit of exploring.  On our way back, we passed by Barbarella salon and noticed these folks taking a break outside. Though the stunning red hair of the two ladies really jumps out at you, I really enjoyed the quiet completeness of the gentleman and his personal style on the end. The shoes, shirt, cardigan and jeans all looked effortless and not forced, as does so much of what I’ve seen lately.  Though I’m not a fan of smoking, he wears his cigarette and coffee like a nice set of cuff links.  It’s all good.

You say Steampunk, I say Classy

This photo was from my iPhone, so it’s a little blurry, and I am not talented with photoshop, so it will have to suffice.  Mitch was dressed up for a friends birthday (one of the new Gastown Tattoo staff I believe?) and I thought it warranted a photo.  I like the vest/dress shirt/tattoos/hitler-youth-hair combo. Mitch says steampunk style, I say classy.  Oh, and I just figured it out that Mitch is 20? 21? ….I thought he was like 30…far too calm and collected for his age, need to get him drunk and maybe set some stuff on fire, much more age appropriate.

While on lunch today … some Style on the Street

I was having coffee at my friend Ken’s shop, Street Level Espresso in Victoria, and this gentleman came in dressed quite well.  I really love the boots, as very few guys are rocking the slim pants and high ankle boots in Victoria yet, and the leather side bag was cool, and not very murse-y.  Honestly, the whole look was well done. I think this fellow owns  a local hair salon, as I recognized the pair of scissors tattooed on his neck… but I could be wrong.

Anyways, good on ya sir.

Mexican Pointy Boots

I doubt this trend will ever make it all the way up to Canada, but I thought it was interesting.  Also a good study in how fashion trends spread, no matter how odd they may seem.

Fashion Ink Part 2 – Capital City Tattoo Convention

This Saturday, I went to the Capital City Tattoo convention to get more work done on my tattoo by Garret Egles, check out the other tattoo artists and see some serious alternative style.

So, Lets start off with G-Money himself, bow tie and all.  Clearly, you are not hip unless you have a waxed mustache.  This is the man I entrusted to mark me for life.  Which I guess makes sense, since when we used to be room mates, there are plenty of things he’s done that have scarred me for life, such as getting loser-drunk and beating me with a shower curtain rod while… oh never mind.

Here we have Garret laying down ink while I try to nap… 5 hours sleep the night before, and you do actually start to fall asleep while getting inked… must be the endorphins.

This is Mitch, Garret’s new partner in the tattoo biz, and a purveyor of the steampunk style.  Though I would never stretch my ears out like Mitch’s, the tunnels with anchors on them are pretty rad.  Mitch was rockin’ the waxed ‘stache before it was cool.

One of Mitch’s clients at the tattoo convention, a brave young lady who grinned and bared it through 2 hours of tattooing that went right into her arm pit. Believe me, that hurts.  See next photo to have a look…

Thigh-high latex boots and a matching bag. Need I say more?

Ah, I love the contrast here:  A bad-ass head tattoo, but it says “Princess”.  How sweet.

And what would be a tattoo show without at least one punk. I believe his name is Justin, and I think that’s about as punk as it gets.

The show was great, I got to see some interesting people, and my latest tattoo is coming along well.

Diamond Rings part Deux.

I went and saw Diamond Rings live on Saturday night… it was rad! John O’Reagan, aka Diamond Rings was quite impressive live, playing the guitar, keyboard/synth, drum machine, laptop and singing over it all. I was also pleasantly surprised by the opening band PS I Love You. They were a two man band, and seriously rocked. Here is a video I took at the show of Diamond Rings playing his radio hit “Something Else”.   I apologize for cutting off the first 10 seconds of the song, I got caught off guard before I could start filming.

You can read the original post about Diamond Rings here.

This was the opening band, PS I Love You:

Style on the Streets of Vancouver

One of the very few ladies on Granville St. that actually had style, and wasn’t dressed like a prosti-tot.

My friend Erica van der Basch looking stylish apres work.

One of my best friends, Garret Egles, and Erica vdB’s man friend. He makes tattoos and funny faces and appreciates when I make manicotti.  He also rocks serious street style, and does excellent graphic t-shirts.

Granville St. Tattoos where Garret works. I wish I had a better picture of Mitch, the fellow sitting in the background,  you can somewhat see his rad hat.

Fin.
